Brigid Keenan was never destined to lead a normal life. From her early beginnings--a colorful childhood in India brought to an abrupt end by Independence and Partition, then a return to dreary postwar England and on to a finishing school in Paris with daughters of presidents and princes--ordinary just wasn't for her. When, as a ten-year-old, she overheard her mother describe her as "desperately plain," she decided then and there that she had to rely on something different: glamour, eccentricity, character, a career--anything, so as not to end up at the bottom of the pile. And in classic Brigid style, she somehow ended up with them all.
Fate often gave Brigid a helping hand: in the late fifties, in her teens, she landed a job as an assistant at the Daily Express in London, and by the tender age of twenty-one she was a fashion editor at the Sunday Times. It was the dawn of the swinging sixties, and London was the place to be. Brigid teamed up with David Bailey and Jean Shrimpton, chatted with Vidal Sassoon, drove around London in a minivan, covered the Paris Collections and was labeled a "Young Meteor" by the press. Though she was always trying to do her best, sometimes her enthusiasm--and naïveté--led to a succession of hilarious misadventures, like the time she turned up to report on the Vietnam war wearing a miniskirt . . .

About the Author
Brigid Keenan is an author and journalist. She has worked as an editor at Nova magazine, the Observer, and the Sunday Times. She has published two fashion histories as well as Travels in Kashmir, Damascus, the bestselling Diplomatic Baggage, and, most recently, the companion memoir Packing Up. Brigid Keenan is a founding board member of the Palestine Festival of Literature. She lives in Pimlico and Somerset.

Talking 'Bout Her Generation.

Brigid Keenan’s memoir is fab. It starts with her ‘technicolour’ upbringing in India up until the age of eight as the daughter of an army officer in the closing days of the Raj. Then back to the bleakness of post-war Blighty, rationing, ghastly food and, worst of all, being despatched to boarding school. It is the only downside to a thoroughly happy childhood, one that she says was “the exact opposite of a misery memoir”. How refreshing!
Brigid talks about ‘coming out’ – a different meaning then of course: becoming a debutante was the upper middle-class route to marriage. It didn’t work for her. Having overheard her mother describing her middle daughter as ‘desperately plain’, Brigid determines to make something of herself. A starter job at Westminster Press leads to her becoming Fashion Editor of The Sunday Times at the ripe old age of twenty-one and then on to the late, great Nova (cover price in those days four shillings, now up to £80 on eBay). It was the era of Bailey, Quant, ‘The Shrimp’, Sassoon, a time that positively crackled with energy, excitement and possibility. Youth was - contemporary cliché klaxon - where it was at.
I completely fell in love with Brigid Keenan’s unfussy writing - she hits just the right note of self-deprecation without sounding remotely false. A bible of the sixties termed her one of the ‘Young Meteors’, she tells us rather proudly. She also shows loyalty to her friends and displays an abiding enjoyment of the follies of life. There are chuckles of recognition, sighs of lament for a bygone time, heaps of unlikely escapades. After one such, she writes: “I can’t really believe I am writing this; sometimes now my younger self astonishes me.” (Same here.) Full Marks for Trying is a thoroughly enjoyable read and very warmly recommended. Full marks for succeeding, Brigid!
