Murdoch's World: The Last of the Old Media Empires, by David Folkenflik

Rupert Murdoch is the most significant media tycoon the English-speaking world has ever known. No one before him has trafficked in media influence across those nations so effectively, nor has anyone else so singularly redefined the culture of news and the rules of journalism. In a stretch spanning six decades, he built News Corp from a small paper in Adelaide, Australia into a multimedia empire capable of challenging national broadcasters, rolling governments, and swatting aside commercial rivals. Then, over two years, a series of scandals threatened to unravel his entire creation.

Murdoch’s defenders questioned how much he could have known about the bribery and phone hacking undertaken by his journalists in London. But to an exceptional degree, News Corp was an institution cast in the image of a single man. The company’s culture was deeply rooted in an Australian buccaneering spirit, a brawling British populism, and an outsized American libertarian sensibility—at least when it suited Murdoch’s interests.

David Folkenflik, the media correspondent for NPR News, explains how the man behind Britain’s take-no-prisoners tabloids, who reinvigorated Roger Ailes by backing his vision for Fox News, who gave a new swagger to the New York Post and a new style to the Wall Street Journal, survived the scandals—and the true cost of this survival. He summarily ended his marriage, alienated much of his family, and split his corporation asunder to protect the source of his vast wealth (on the one side), and the source of his identity (on the other). There were moments when the global news chief panicked. But as long as Rupert Murdoch remains the person at the top, Murdoch’s World will be making news.

From Booklist
One cannot, even facetiously, describe this account of Rupert Murdoch’s life and the most influential media empire in the history of the English-speaking world as “fair and balanced.“ It is neither. But it is entertaining and informative, sometimes dauntingly so (as in the organizational details), though tilting more than slightly from that objective center that Murdoch’s American broadcast news outlet, Fox, characterizes itself as being. Folkenflik, the media correspondent for NPR, has encountered Murdoch’s world in that capacity and, formerly, when he was with the Baltimore Sun, and he has developed the contacts and style that make this reportage fascinating and credible. In covering the variety of media acquisitions and operations in Australia, the UK, and the U.S., Folkenflik—writing in the midst of the disclosures of hacking and the ensuing scandal, bloodletting, and criminal charges—portrays the corporate culture behind them. He describes the internecine wars, often familial, within an organization that, however much it claims to encourage autonomy, is consistently an extension of the man at its head, the Australian “buccaneer,” Murdoch. --Mark Levine

Review

“Entertaining and informative…Folkenflik, the media correspondent for NPR… has developed the contacts and style that make this reportage fascinating and credible.”—Booklist

“Folkenflik lucidly and effectively sorts out the complicated phone-hacking story and its political ramifications.”—Kirkus

“Murdoch's World is bolstered by deep reporting, including scores of interviews, and laced with delicious anecdotes.”—Los Angeles Times

“I'm not sure I've seen a more apt capturing of Roger Ailes, a hardcore ideologue, the creator of one of the great anti-fact engines in the history of American life but at some level at [his] core someone who knows how to create and loves great television above all else.”—Josh Marshall, publisher of Talking Points Memo

Extraordinarily fine piece of work
By Graf von Foto
This is a very engrossing narrative that is informative, sobering, and chilling. The book reflects the author's own reporting over many years on the aggressive Murdoch news/entertainment empire as well as research done specifically for the book. It has an extensive bibliography and has meticulously annotated page notes documenting sources that occupy about a fourth of the entire book. There is also a detailed index that works with the Kindle.

This reader was aware of some of the excesses of the news media of Murdoch's empire, both in the US and the UK. However he did appreciate the depth of the depravity that is documented in detail by this book for activities in the UK that ultimately resulted in the closing of News of the World in England, after 168 years of publishing.
* Widespread hacking of telephone voicemail boxes (thousands) to gain tidbits for publishing. The targets ranged from royalty like Prince Charles, close relatives of former prime ministers, MPs, celebrities like Hugh Grant, to more ordinary people: people who had been killed in the 2005 bus and subway bombings, British soldiers killed in Afghanistan or Iraq, and during the police hunt the phone 13 year old girl who had been murdered.
* Scotland Yard kept and ignored extensive documentation of hacking activity.
* Bribing the police to gain confidential information on people's whereabouts or phone numbers to hack.
* Blackmailing a person into giving interviews.
* Following MP members of investigative committees by private investigators who were looking for dirt.
* Tit-for-tat or undue influence with politicians at the highest levels of the UK government.

Unsavory activities in the US had some surprises, but they are not on the scale of what happened in the UK.
* Setting up a journalist they did not like with a false "tip".
* Planting numerous phony "reviews" or comments by their own employees against people or organizations they did not like.
* Claims that Obama had studied at a Wahhabist madrassa and that was not bone in the US.
* Large political contributions in 2010 elections blur line between balanced news coverage and political advocacy.
* Pressuring Romney to choose Ryan as his running mate in 2012.
* Pressuring Christie to support Romney.

There is an interesting and generally favorable discussion of the Wall Street Journal's delicate situation and its actions of preserving its reputation for independence after being taken over by Murdoch.

There is no formal epilogue, but much of the last chapter serves that role:

One of the ironies is a description of some consequences of journalism run amok, but which do not come immediately to mind while reading the book as a whole: A bedrock of both British and US American culture is a free press. That freedom allowed Murdoch's empire grow and flourish. However, once the astounding excesses of that empire become known, pressures can arise to deal with the abuse with the heavy hand of law, compromising that bedrock for everyone. This realization reinforces the need to understand that a free press must also be responsible to considerations above monetary gains or advantages of influence.

This message is coupled with the admonition that we as a people share in the responsibility for the abuses:
"Murdoch similarly could not have accumulated his fortunes without our help. We are all, as consumers of media, involved and even responsible for the creation of Murdoch's World ---those of us who pick up his tabloids at the newsstand, enjoy the cable news wars, subscribe to his prestigious papers, watch a ballgame on TV, buy tickets to a movie, even those of us who are News Corp investors through pension funds or mutual funds. We make up the market that he sought to create and feed. He played us, as much as he played everyone else. And we have rewarded him handsomely for it."
This statement appearing near the end of the book reflects on Murdoch's attitude expressed early in the book. In a curious twist of word meanings, Murdoch said that what he did was in the public interest, because people are interested in reading it.

There is an interesting change of mood in the denouement. Up to this point, there has been an edge on the narrative, which was a necessary consequence of the nature of the tawdry events that were described. Here, however, there is a gentleness that visits the pages, exhibiting some empathy for many of the characters, including Rupert Murdoch himself. This whole story is not unlike a Greek tragedy in which the fatal flaws of the principals eventually take their toll.

This book is an extraordinarily fine piece of work.

On a technical note, the extensive page notes of the book are difficult to use in the Kindle format, because of the necessity to jump back and forth. In fact, one does not even know when to jump while reading the main text, because the page notes are organized around page numbers that are irrelevant in the Kindle format. This is a situation for which the hard copy is much better suited. However, in the Kindle format, having once read the book, one can just start reading the page notes and use the links to the appropriate text, and use the Back button to return to the page notes. Alternatively, one can do this on a chapter by chapter basis while reading.

There are so many different characters and branches of the Murdoch empire that it is a little difficult to keep track of them all during the reading. A table of the people, the business, and their connections would have been useful. A serious reader might be like to assemble such a table as the reading proceeds.

Rupert Murdoch - Enemy of Democracy and Civilisation
By nonamespecified
A valuable accounting of Rupert Murdoch's career of subverting the foundations of democracy and civilisation. The book shows how powerless the institutions of democracies are to resist the corrupting influence of power-mad media tycoons like Murdoch. Where are the checks and balances against such power? What is to prevent another power-mad media tycoon from taking over where Murdoch left off and finishing off democracy once and for all. Though we all probably agree that democracy cannot survive without an informed and educated populace, what if it is not in the interests of the media owners to have an informed populace? What if it is in their interests instead to systematically misinform the populace? Who is going to stop them? Who can silence Murdoch's army of shouting bullies like OReilly and Hannity? The book makes one think about the vulnerability of democracy to media demagoguery and its uncertain future.

A bold, iconoclastic view of Paul of Tarsus from the 18th century
By Michael D. Reynolds
When "Critical Examination of the Life of St. Paul" was first published in 1770, writing books critical of religion could be punished in France with death. Therefore the author, Paul Thiry (Baron d'Holbach), published his critiques of religion anonymously or pseudonymously. The volume in hand is mistakenly attributed by the publisher to two other men in addition to the actual author.
Thiry reviews the life of Paul of Tarsus as set out in "The Bible," and presents an analysis of his life and character. At the start he discusses the contentious opinions of the earliest Christian sects about which texts were sacred. He observes that the separation of Christianity from Judaism was the work of Paul. Continuing with the religion's early history, he states, "We should never finish, were we to enter into a detail of the excesses committed by the Fathers of the Church and their Councils." He observes how the "guardians of the holy books" were able to insert new text into them. Thus in just 10 pages Thiry anticipates major topics in truthful histories of Christianity of the present day.
The author describes Paul's "sometimes practicing, and at others decrying, Judaism," and suggests that this behavior was motivated by Paul's "own interest and safety." He explains the apostle's preference for and success in proselyting pagans. Nevertheless, "we see him excite trouble and clamour in whatever cities he happened to be."
Turning to Paul's character, Thiry presents evidence that he was ambitious, and proposes this as the reason for his adoption of the sect of Jesus. He notes that the concept of control of the sectarians by a "spiritual" leader originated with Paul, not Jesus. In relation to the other apostles, Paul was disputatious and "obstinately attached to his own ideas." One of those ideas was that Jesus was God. Thiry does not find evidence for this notion among Jesus' own disciples, or in the teachings of Jesus himself.
The study of Paul is interspersed with remarks about the contentiousness and arrogance of the Church. The book ends with chapters on divine inspiration and the foundations of Christianity. Thiry concludes with an exhortation not to take Paul as a model, but to be "just, benevolent, peaceable" and to manifest "not an evangelical charity which is converted into fury and hatred, but a real charity."
This is a remarkable book, whose author extricated himself from the prevailing thought of his age and courageously opposed dogmatic and distorted ideas with facts and reasoned analysis.Critical Examination of the Life of St. Paul, Tr. From the Fr. of Boulanger [Or Rather From P.h.d. Von Holbach's Tr. of P. Annet.].

The real Apostle Paul?
By Larry C
It is a probing exploration of the founder of Christianity as it is now practiced. This book requires and open mind. Warning, the faithful may be offended, but all would learn about the man, his teachings, his founding of many churches and his devotion to his own belief of the meaning of Jesus' words.

Why Life Speeds Up As You Get Older: How Memory Shapes our Past, by Douwe Draaisma

Is it true, as the novelist Cees Nooteboom once wrote, that memory is like a dog that lies down where it pleases? Where do the long, lazy summers of our childhood go? Why, as we grow older, does time seem to condense, speed up and elude us, while in old age, significant events from our distant past can seem as vivid and real as what happened yesterday? Douwe Draaisma, author of the internationally acclaimed Metaphors of Memory (Cambridge, 2001), explores the nature of autobiographical memory. Applying a unique blend of scholarship, poetic sensibility, and keen observation, he tackles such extraordinary phenomena as deja-vu, near-death experiences, the memory feats of idiot savants, and the effects of extreme trauma on memory recall. Raising almost as many questions as it answers, this fascinating book will not fail to affect you at the same time as it educates and entertains. Douwe Draaisma is Professor of the History of Psychology in the Department of Theory and History of Psychology at the University of Groningen, The Netherlands. He has published books on time and memory and his articles have appeared in professional journals as diverse as Annals of Science, Psychological Medicine, and Nature. The original Dutch version of Why Life Speeds Up As You Get Older has won several scientific and literary awards.

"In this remarkable volume, our hope of understanding the impact of time upon memory is amply met. Douwe Draaisma, an academic psychologist in the Netherlands, has organized a compelling and thorough review of studies in memory. These studies are offered to the reader in understandable terms, thanks to both the author's clarity of presentation and to the skill of the translators, Arnold and Erica Pomerans."

Evaluation of Our Real Memories
By Rob Hardy
Every psychiatrist has some quick tests to check on how your memory is working: reciting digits forward and backward, recalling the presidents sequentially, remembering three objects after three minutes, and so on. Such functions of memory are important, but they are not what we think of as real, personal memory, the subjective recall of what has gone on in our lives, the family reunions, childhood joys and traumas, successive homes, and so on. These stored personal experiences form our "autobiographical memory." It has only been known as such for about twenty years, basically because the other types of memory (like digit recall) have been more easily subject to psychological testing. The autobiographical memory is the main subject of essays in _Why Life Speeds Up as You Get Older: How Memory Shapes Our Past_ (Cambridge University Press) by Douwe Draaisma (translated from the Dutch by Arnold and Erica Pomerans). There are surprisingly few hard answers in this book. In writing about the near-death experience, for instance, Draaisma says that examining the hypotheses that might explain it makes clear that "... all they amount to is a handful of conjectures, a few statistical links and suggestive analogies." Nonetheless, our autobiographical memories are such an integral part of ourselves that it is fascinating to learn how scientists have been trying to explain just how this vital part of personality operates, and how much of the memory capacity that we take for granted is still mysterious and beyond even initial probes.

To start with, despite the book's title which is taken from just one of its chapters, there is not a fully accepted reason for older people to think that life is going faster for them than it did when they were younger. William James himself in 1890 explained that in youth, there were novel experiences, something new every day, but every passing year brought routine which smoothed the days, weeks, and years into a collapse of time. A period full of memories, viewed in retrospect, seems to expand and be fuller and longer. There is a chapter to examine the universal phenomenon that that none of us remember our earliest year or two, not at all. "We shall have to wait and see if our life ends with memory loss," Draaisma writes, "what is certain is that it starts with it." We did have working memories at the time; we were adding buckets of words to our vocabularies, and we had a daily capacity of remembering our relatives, our pets, our routines. A possible explanation for the veil drawn over the first years of memory is that the child has yet to develop full consciousness; if there is no "I" within, there can be no autobiographical memory.

As befits an expert writing for laymen, Draaisma writes powerfully using comparisons. In discussing the "tip of the tongue" phenomenon, where you remember you know something but cannot remember the thing itself, he writes that there is something that has stayed back in the memory, "something like the discoloured patch on the wall whose outlines tell you what used to hang there for years." There is a good range of chapters here to cover aspects of an appealing subject, including the memory and calculating power of so-called idiot savants, the "flashbulb memory" that enables us to tell exactly (or maybe not) what we were doing when we heard of an earth-shattering event like the 9/11 attacks, the scientific evaluation of déjà vu, the examination of why smells can produce such evocative memories, a checkers grandmaster explaining (or being unable to explain) how he plays multiple blindfold games simultaneously, and why we remember humiliating memories so clearly and permanently. It is fascinating that with such tools as brain scans, we are getting closer to understanding how the mind works, but the memory we take for granted every day has barely begun to yield its secrets.

Lots of really interesting stuff about memory
By Ronald van Vollenhoven
Draaisma, a professor of psychology in the Netherlands, is a highly regarded scientist who has devoted his professional life to studying memories, but he is also a good and entertaining writer. So when he sets out in each of the essays in this book to highlight one of the many fascinating aspects of memory, you are garanteed to get a good read. The title of the book is just one of the very interesting and thought-provoking subjects he touches upon (and in case you wonder: no, there is no one clear answer to that question). A little surprise in the book comes when Draaisma switches gears and writes very eloquently about certain historical events during WWII - which then leads on to legal issues and the reliability of memories in court.
The original Dutch-language version of this book gets 5 stars from me, hands down. The English translation loses a bit of the spontaneity and entusiasm that Draaisma conveys in the original, but if you're not planning on learning Dutch, and you do have an interest in memory, then you will enjoy this book a lot.

Useful and interesting.
By Mid-Centurian
I would recommend this book for students, mental health professionals, and the general public. Not only does the author use understandable terms to describe technical situations, he uses clear, precise examples to help his readers understand this intricate subject. It is an easy read with gentle pacing and a very human touch. The author is European but presents universal ideas.
