Despite flaws, this is the best textbook for Healing Gardens

Conclusion:
Despite it's flaws, it is probably the best textbook available on Healing Gardens.

Pros:
Clear advice to help landscape architects design healing gardens.

A comprehensive discussion of theory.

Cons:
If you want a picture book, this is not for you.

No evidence-based design (because there isn't any)

My first impression of this book was not good. I am a visual person and I wanted to see some large full-color pictures of healing gardens. Instead, most of the images were back & white, small and of mediocre quality.

Many of the images appear to have been taken by amateurs and the inexpensive printing on non-glossy paper did not help.

Yes there is a 14-page glossy color insert in the center of the book, but the snapshots shown were tiny, with 3 or 4 clustered on each page. There was no clear connection from the text to these images.

Site plans are critical to landscape gardening. There were only 35 site plans in this book of 610 pages and like the photographs, they too were small; typically about 4 x 4-inches each and none were in color.

The book's subtitle "Therapeutic Benefits..." and the use of Roger Ulrich as the author of Chapter Two suggests that evidence-based design will be central but it seems that there is not much good research to draw from. Ulrich writes "... very little research directly relevant to gardens has used the types of experimental-scientific methods that are considered sound and persuasive...".

Instead of evidence we have to consider the advice of experts and certainly the two main authors: Clarie Cooper Marcus and Marni Barnes are experts. They also happen to be very good writers. They have clear suggestions for a wide range of healing gardens. They have separate chapters focusing on:
* Acute Care Hospitals
* Psychiatric Hospitals
* Children's Hospitals
* Nursing Homes
* Hospices
* Alzheimer's Facilities

Chapter 11 is called "Getting it Done" and it offers practical advice based on several case studies. It discusses funding and implementation in ways that would be very useful to someone who was meeting with resistance from the hospital administration.

At the end of every chapter there are several pages of references. For those in an academic setting these would be useful.

I might have missed it, but one thing I did not find in the book was: how to deal with gardens when plants are dormant. The two main authors are from the Bay area where the growing season is year-round. However, much of the rest of the planet has distinct seasons. Is it really "healing" to look out into a garden devoid of vegetation for several months a year?

The case studies and design recommendations are grouped by health care setting, which makes the reading more focused. By far the best professional text on the topic.

"A fantastic book. Short yet very concise chapters contain a wealth of information, drugs and dose rates are displayed in easy reference tables making it super fast to double check if what you have just drawn into the syringe will be enough or too much!
As this book is a handbook it would be silly to expect it to explain the huge amount of theory behind the subjects of equine anaesthesia, however it is amazing for putting in your back pocket on those long equine surgery nights during rotations to make sure you have vital information with you. I don’t even like equine studies, but I found myself reading pages and pages of the book without realising it, because the information is relayed to the reader in an easy to digest manner.
I can also honestly say that I have already recommended this book to three of my friends who are interested in equine surgery, showed them the book and got the same response each time, which was something along the lines of ‘That is really really good!’
A top notch handbook for a tough subject. Recommended to all."

"Equine anaesthesia can be one of those areas dreaded by many clinicians, especially if their practice does not undertake many equine surgical procedures. Fear not; the second edition of this handbook again provides an easy reference to the expanding world of equine anaesthesia. The book’s size, and relatively short chapters, may make it less daunting to those who find it easier to send themselves to sleep rather than the horse! The book is still intended for all those who anaesthetise horses, both in a surgical environment and also the occasional ‘field’ anaesthesia.

All in all, this handbook provides the essential drugs and doses required to achieve a safer, smoother and more pain-free anaesthesia. "This book is a must for all veterinary surgeons who carry out equine work. Not only does it cover all aspects of anaesthesia, but also has an excellent chapter on analgesia, sedation and premedication.

Equine nurses will also find this book useful for its chapter on monitoring. Every equine practice should own several copies, and have one tied to the anaesthetic machine. The chart in the front cover, "A routine for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) after cardiac arrest", should be read before induction by most veterinary anaesthesists, unless they carry our general anaesthetics on a daily basis.

To sum up, this is an excellent book, which should be read - and re-read - at every opportunity. The knowledge within will definitely stop many panic situations and, I suspect, it will save many horses' lives."

Good quick reference

This book is a good quick reference for during anesthetic procedures. Some info is out of date and there is not a lot of great detail. So it is essentially what it claims, a handbook. I keep it on my anesthesia cart for a quick guide when needed.

This one takes place in remote Oregon, where the town of Nearby has suddenly found itself in the middle of a mystery, or two, thanks to the instinct of its police chief, Frankie (a middle-aged lady), who has two deputies, one of whom, Ron Haskell, is as laid back as they come, and gay as a goose but not outwardly (sort of a mid-sized and toned down lumberjack type). He and his straight footloose and fancy free cop partner, Zeke, are at loose ends when they are assigned to pick up and work with two FBI agents who've flown in from Los Angeles to check out what chief Frankie believes could be a local link to a series of serial killings that have plagued the I-5 corridor for more than 20 years. One of those agents is the blond, toned, and spectacularly gorgeous Adam Darling, whose female partner is so similar in "composition" to him that Rob and Zeke immediately dub them Ken and Barbie.

That's where the kid's games stop.

This is a very neatly plotted, twist-and-turn Lanyon tour de force which concentrates on hiding clues from its cast and reader just as well as all his other series. The explosive beginning and hot-and-cold segues in the relationship between Rob and Adam leave you out on a hook until the very end--a very surprising end all around.

Along the way you will learn a lot about the Native American culture of the Northwest, the attitudes of the usual gang of stereotypical small-town characters, and the way mid-30s lonely gay men eventually have to face the future, with or without hope. I think Lanyon is giving us a clue in the ending of this one, and one would hope he's got another couple of adventures percolating for two very different, yet seriously compatible, men.

Thrilling, gripping mystery from an excellent author

I just finished reading Winter Kill and I’m feeling tremendously satisfied because, hands down, Josh Lanyon is so very good at what he does. And it's always lovely to see someone being amazingly skillful in his job.

This is a book about deputy sheriff Rob Haskell and FBI agent Adam Darling trying to solve murders which rapidly grow in number as the story continues. There seems to be a serial killer on loose. But that's definitely not all this story is about!

I enjoyed the sinister feeling the prologue threw over the book. And how the playful, joyful sparks of Rob and Adam’s first night together collides and mixes with the dark chase of a serial killer! The author really gives food for all our senses while walking us through cold, pine smelling landscape filled with sodden autumn leaves in the remote town of Nearby. There's a lot of delightful, sarcastic dialog and even a couple of small cross-over moments with Lanyon's All's Fair series. And it wouldn't be a Josh Lanyon book, if it didn't also have many poetic, thought-provoking images such as ”like the first time you saw butterflies covering carrion” and ”noticed soft, white snow angels in a graveyard”.

I really fell for the two main characters. I like how Adam is the voice of reason and how Rob acts more based on emotion. I like the city-boy-meets-wilderness aspect of the story. There is something irresistible about the dynamics between these two men. At the first glance they seem to be pretty much opposite personalities from each other, with very different way of thinking and acting. But… when you get to know them a bit better you realize how much in common they actually have. Their principals, their goals are the same (in work and in life in general). They’re just both approaching their principals and goals differently. I like how persistent Rob is and how analytically Adam thinks. And I like how their traits start to evolve towards each other during the story.

Near the end of the book there's an outburst of Rob’s that made my heart turn into an ice-cold snowball inside my chest. But I do love how we learn so much of both characters during these arguments between them. There are so many scenes that are like goldmines into the main characters’ personas. Glimpses into their past, telltales of what nuances in their character originate from what has happened to them in the past life. And what nuances are related to their hopes and dreams and what they believe in. I loved finding these delicately, skillfully, beautifully planted clues to who these men really are.

Josh Lanyon masterfully kept all the strings in his trustworthy hands throughout the story and made at least this reader to change her mind about primary suspect(s) for several times — all the way to the end. This mystery sure was a tricky one! I loved the complexity of it and the fact that the crimes were spread throughout such a long timespan. I throughly enjoyed how the author had sprinkled so many possible clues around and also gave us a few of those wonderful "Ah-ha!" moments near the end — the moments when the reader can feel herself as clever as an FBI agent! :-)

In the end Winter Kill left me with some "reason versus emotion” pondering. Both objectively thinking and spontaneous action helped to achieve positive, satisfying outcomes in this story. I find it intriguing. I find it real. I find it... reassuring. I find it as one of the hardest balancing acts in life.

Thank you for yet another great book, Mr. Lanyon. This one was like that wildflower growing from a crack in the pavement an inch from Adam’s nose — meaningful in so many ways.

bicker like children, and end up in bed

Perhaps I have read too many Josh Lanyon books in too short a time span. They are starting to blur into one. Still it is hard to miss the ubiquitous prickly hero, dealing (poorly) with a new partner and/or former lover years after the affair went south. We all know they will be thrown together on a case, bicker like children, and end up in bed. Lanyon really needs to find a new trope for his leads. The mysteries are decent, but I can't help but feel I've already read each new book because the hero is a copy of the previous one, right down to his description of sex, and how pleasurable it is, always "needing" to bottom.
All that said, I will probably continue to read Lanyon, but will put more time between books.

Gets everything right

These writers really know Texas - I live in Houston, but I travel all over the state (I use these books to get day trip ideas) and they really nail pretty much every aspect of the Lone Star State: the best places for barbecue, the essential sights, the culture... like most Lonely Planet guides, the coverage of off-the-beaten-path destinations and outdoor activities is top-notch, which I love (although Frommer's has a more nuanced rating system and Fodor's has the prettiest layouts... but that's a discussion for another day).

In short, this is overall the best Texas guide I've read. My only hang-up is the writing in certain chapters (the Gulf Coast, in particular) is pretty dry, although the rest of the chapters are quite engaging. The quality of information throughout, however, is impeccable.

(P.S. - To the reviewer mentioning the "gross" food recommendations in Lockhart - I strongly disagree with you, as does apparently Texas Monthly and the long lines of people waiting out the door.)

I wished there were more substantial separate guides for each of the major Texas cities

Honestly, each of the sections in this book should probably have it's own book, Dallas, San Antonio, Houston, Austin, etc. I just spent 9 days in Houston and got this book, in addition to several other relevant tour guides. In the end, I stopped using the other guides and consulted just with LP. In general, LP writers have a better feel for what is important, what is fun, and what is interesting. Houston is the fourth most populated city in the USA and growing. There's lots to do and while the 40 or so pages devoted to Houston were good, the best among the sources I had, I wished there was more. A problem in writing a Hoston tour guide is that it is growing and changing so quickly. Galveston is also interesting and the section on Galveston (just an hour away from Houston), should have been much, much bigger, too.
addendum (3/12/16): Just came back from 9 days in San Antonio and the Hill Country. I found these sections of this book just as good, and after buying and trying to use the other guides, I found this one the best
