About the Author
Will Farmer studied at the Birmingham School of Jewellery and went on to become a director of Fieldings auction house. He is a noted authority on twentieth century decorative arts, in particular glass and ceramics, and is one of the experts on the BBC's 'Antiques Roadshow'. He is a regular contributor to 'BBC Homes and Antiques' magazine.

Fundamental Resource

Will Farmer's concise book demonstrates the basic knowledge of Clarice Cliff's place in the art deco field. Unfortunately for me, there is nothing new. He did convey all the basic information that I have studied in other resources. I am always hoping for a startling new discovery about her or her brilliant ability to organize the design and manufacturing of the Bizarre line. Photography was adequate and did show her mastery of color. This book is a watered down repeat of more detailed accounts. I did find it interesting that he has been a fan since he was 14 years old.

Great tool to improve vocabulary

i purchased this product to improve my vocabulary as English is my second language. Even though I am an attorney practicing throughout different courts in the United States, ANYONE can improve their lexicon regardless of job, status, career, etc.

I have listened to the Word Master for about 3 months so far and I have the following comments:

Pros
- Excellent quality of sound
- The background music is dulcet to the ears
- The words are complex and challenging (most of them at least)
- Every so often there will be a hiatus to allow the speakers to provide some historical information on certain terms which I find interesting and intellectually stimulating
- Relatively affordable price

Cons
The background music is monotonous and will get boring after a while
I wish it came with a PDF file listing all of the words
Some definitions (I have found at least 3) provided by the speakers are not totally correct or at least not totally consistent with the ones provided in well regarded dictionaries

Be warned that it does take time and effort before you can become eloquent and can master these words. Do not expect overnight results. Depending on your consistency and effort, you are probably looking at about 12 months before you can master Word Master.

I commend you on your desire to enhance your vocabulary and wish you the very best.

This product has been great. I have been listing to it for over a year and have enhanced my vocabulary in doing so. It's great for the drive home, going on a trip, at the gym, or just listing to it at your home. My 7 year old daughter likes to listen to it as well. It's funny to hear her use some of the terms like when she is hungry she wants something salubrious to eat or when we are in the store and she is telling her 4 year old brother to stop being rapacious. On a more serious note it's been greatly used in my professional area. I highly recommend this to anyone looking to increase there verbal finesse.

Nice product to listen that Improves vocab & saves time too.

Overall great product that teaches you words, their pronunciation and usage. I expected it to inform me some more details about the word e.g. its history & origin, usage in a more elaborated way to know where it can be used and where it cannot be. It tried to do justice what it was intended for. The audio version saves you time while mutitasking. I listen to it while commuting from home to work. Overall I liked it and I am 200 words stronger in just 10 days after listening to 4 CDs(I am yet to listen to rest of the CDs.). Worth mentioning that it gives you the synonyms too thats helps understand the word better. A thumbs up from me...!!!

EXCELLENT Poker Training

Another outstanding poker training work from Alton Hardin. He presents from soup to nuts how to play online poker. Not just a primer for the newbie but an education in how to play for even the experienced. It is easy to get caught up in the excitement of HUD's, tracking programs, etc. without knowing how to properly utilize these in game play. Opponents are using these methods against you so you need to be versed in how best to utilize the available resources. I have bought Alton's materials for the last three months and have learned more in that time period than I did the prior two years. I had my mind muddled with so many concepts that I could not just sit down and play cohesively. Alton has brought all of the elements of poker together for me making my play flow rather than have knee-jerk reactions. I am enjoying playing much more. His video series that is a companion to this book is excellent. Go to [...] for the video course - Alton does extensive live play and hand replay lessons that are invaluable to bringing together the implementation of his teachings. ALL of his video courses are just outstanding. I am VERY judicious with my time and training budget and Alton's courses and books are the BEST poker investment I have found.

We always hear play the player and not the cards. Easier to do at live tables but not online. This book is a wealth of information on playing the player online termed exploitative poker. Not only that but his book is easy to read and makes you want to read more. A fantastic book to take me to the next step. A collection to cherish

Nayyirah Waheed's poetry changed me the moment I first read it and continues to open my heart as I sit with it more. Salt is a stark, beautiful collection of works that are startling in their brevity and breathtaking in their profundity. Waheed delves into the essence of the human heart, of womanhood, of the experience of being a person of color living in a centuries-old diaspora. As a white woman, I experience both deep kinship with her words--particularly those that speak to my humanity and womanhood--and also a sense that it is an honor for me to be a witness to her writing on race and ethnicity. Salt sparked something in me that had long lay dormant, and I have been reading and even writing poetry with a gusto and joy I didn't know I missed until I encountered Waheed's work. There is healing and delight and playfulness and lament and righteous anger in this book. Read it, cherish it, and never be the same.

Wondrous.

As someone with an extremely fast reading speed, I usually race through novels and the like. Nayyirah Waheed's work stopped me. I devoured the first few poems, and then slowed. Then I stopped completely. I was sitting in my lawn, and I could feel my heartbeat thrumming through my veins as I read each poem slowly, savoring it. To be honest, I spent potential textbook money on this work, and regretted it the entire time I was waiting for the product to arrive. Then I held it and read it and fell in love with the words and this is probably the most worthy book I've purchased all semester. Planning to buy another copy for my favorite teacher later this year.

Overtly biased account of British media

This detailed study looks at the British press's portrayal of the EU in the year before the 1997 General Election and during the British EU presidency of 1998. From the start, the authors admit to what they call an `overt as well as ideological pro-European underpinning'. (This incidentally reveals that they make the familiar EU supporters' confusion between Europe and the European Union.)
Their description of the articles that they analyse is often highly tendentious. They construe praise for any European country's achievements as `pro-Europe', again meaning pro-EU. They describe as `vague yet highly emotional' and `Europhobic' the legally correct statement that "No government has the right to give away sovereignty. Our sovereignty does not belong to politicians. It belongs to the people." They write that calling Greece poverty-stricken is `inadmissibly xenophobic'. So we can easily see how they are able to dismiss all the coverage of the EU by the Times, the Telegraph, the Mail, the Express and the Sun as xenophobic.
They also accuse these papers of `Germanophobia'. Their evidence for this? That these papers dare to assert that Germany retains its historic ambitions to expand. The authors have apparently discovered a novelty: a capitalist class that has no desire to expand.
So this book shows how empty EU supporters' accusations of xenophobia are. We should not accept our enemy's definitions. Opposition to the EU is extremely widespread - we have to work with all those who oppose it. In the Second World War, the Soviet Union did not hold Churchill's past against him. Similarly, we must welcome patriotic allies in our fight for national independence, and we should concentrate our fire on those who back the EU against our nation. The struggle to retain our sovereignty is a national one.

Sam L. Amiranteis a retired judge and lawyer. His first case after leaving the Office of the Public Defender wasThe People of the State of Illinois v. John Wayne Gacy. In 1988, he was appointed to the bench as an Associate Judge of The Circuit Court of Cook County where he served until his retirement in 2005. He is now the principal attorney of the firm of Sam L. Amirante and Associates, P.C. Amirante authored procedures adopted by the Illinois General Assembly such as the Missing Child Act of 1984 (I-SEARCH), which is credited with helping to locate more than 3,000 missing children. Sam lives with his wife and children in Barrington, Illinois.

Nightmares Galore

This book--I wish I hadn't read it. Having said that, it's not because it's not good--it's quite wonderful, really. But the subject material--ugh. Gacy was a full plate of cray-cray. Amirante comes off as being a sympathetic character--or as sympathetic as a defense attorney can ever be--and a fine writer to boot. TIP: at the end it gets into the courtroom BS, and Amirante takes great pains to document every detail of his closing speech--skip that part. But don't skip the prosecutor's. No way. I've written my fair share of scripts in my time (some of them successful, thank you for wondering), and if I were writing the script for this book, I would keep every word of the prosecutor's closing statement. I'm getting goosebumps just thinking about it. Warning: you will not sleep well for many nights after you read this. The Robert Piest story alone--which Amirante opens with--will make you want to lock your children up in a room until they were 21, and then only let them go after they have GPS trackers. Heartbreaking. Utterly heartbreaking.

An Unenviable and Thankless Task: The John Wayne Gacy Defense Team

John Wayne Gacy has been called many things: The Monster. The Killer Clown. Evil Incarnate. And the chilling truth is that in a short time between 1972 and 1978, Gacy murdered a minimum of thirty-three young men. The victims were sexual prospects and were buried beneath the house in Norwood Park Township, Chicago, IL. Some were dumped in a nearby river when Gacy ran out of space.

The focus of this book is to look beyond the monster and see who Gacy the man really was. At no point do Judge Amirarte and Mr. Broderick deny that Gacy was a terrible murderer. The whole process started with Gacy calling Amirarte to complain that the police were harassing him. A few days later Gacy stumbled in late to a visit with his lawyers, asked for alcohol, gulped about sixteen ounces, then proceeded to confess to horror.

Gacy was a mess; disheveled, dirty, and drunken but his story was too cold and awful to be fake. He stated that since he had been judge, jury, and executioner of others so often, he would now be his own judge, jury, and executioner. For hours the horror story unfolded from Gacy’s lips. It was watching Jekyll turn into Hyde.

John Wayne Gacy was a successful businessman, a high-ranking member of the Jaycees, a registered clown who entertained sick children at hospitals, a good husband and father. He was also depraved, sexually confused—refusing to claim homosexuality although it was his basic choice; and without conscience or mercy.

Judge Amirarte and Broderick had the unenviable task of seeing that Gacy received a fair trial. It is one thing to call a man a monster; it is quite another to realize that the monster is a man, with rights under the Constitution. The Lawyers for the Defense played the only hand they had—not guilty by reason of insanity.

This book explores the attempt to understand what makes a man become a monster as Gacy did. How can a man be an upstanding, respected member of the community who is also the area serial killer? How can a man go from talking normal to a disjointed ramble of a confession to total detachment from the world? These were the questions that needed to be answered and you may judge for yourself as to whether they were.

The Defense believed that Gacy was insane. He was determined to always be the center of attention. He had photos taken with First Lady Roslyn Carter. He was highly active in his community. He could however turn in seconds to a cold, distant person who seemed to be not in control of his actions. He had nights of somnambulism, an empty-eyed, shamble-about-the-house sort of guy.

Self promoting and hard working, he gained respect and ran his business as a remodeler and handyman well enough to live well. He was always ready to lend a hand, and always ready to do almost any work for a little extra money. But the monster lurking within was never far away from the surface. But if this man was truly insane, then the laws protecting the insane needed to shield him from deeds committed while seriously mentally ill. That was Judge Amirarte and Mr. Broderick’s claim and plea. By getting Gacy into a Mental Hospital would stop the killings and perhaps study of the man’s persona would allow Doctors to recognize the next Gacy before people died. It was a good try, but all for naught.

Ultimately, Gacy was found competent to stand trial. He was found guilty on thirty-three murders and sentenced to death. On May 10, 1994 Gacy was executed by lethal injection at Statesville Correction Center in Illinois.

The question still remains. Was Gacy really competent to stand trial or was the outrage over the thirty-three plus victims so great that an example had to be made? We will never truly know…

Sam L. Amirante is a great story teller.

The author was so clear and concise about his motivations for defending Gacy. His devotion to the law and preserving human rights as afforded by the law is admirable. His writing is so good he just drags you along with him in the turmoil of the discovery, preparation and trial. If I would have recused myself, on the basis of what I knew and I would have run. But, Sam believes in the law so much that he was willing to have his life turned upside down and defend a man who actually committed one of the most horrific crimes in our history. He was steadfast and earnest in his convictions. I truly admire him. That being said this could have been a very boring procedural, but the author wrote it in a style that draws you in and make you care what happens next. I ended up buying this because I went to the look inside feature on the site, and Sam's writing hook me immediately.
