 Knight’s Tale breaks boundaries. Along with the exquisite anonymous poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, the Knight’s Tale is the most intricately structured and stylistically pleasing of medieval English romances. For these reasons, it is worthy of its own edition, but what makes it particularly suitable to an illustrated edition is how its narration works by condensing actions and their effects into powerful images and figures. The Knight’s Tale has, in fact, been illustrated many times, but never so thoroughly as in the current edition. Moreover, past illustrations have tended to romanticize or sentimentalize the story, eschewing its most violent and disturbing images. The illustrations in this edition attempt to recapture Chaucer’s mature vision of the noble life, which refuses to deny the tragic aspects of the chivalric equation of love with war and war with honor. Past illustrations have also tended to adopt a Gothic idiom. The illustrations in our edition adopt a Classical Greek idiom drawn from the Parthenon frieze, Attic black- and red-figure pottery, and ancient Greek sculpture—an idiom suitable to the setting of the tale in legendary Athens and Thebes as well as to Chaucer’s humanist impusle.

If considering Theseus’s prosecution of war as a civilizing force, one can point to the fact that he puts an end to Creon’s "tirannye" (941), restoring the bodies of the desecrated dead to the Argive widows. However, if his objective in attacking Thebes is to avenge the widows on Creon, why does he destroy the city after he has already killed him and routed the Theban army, tearing down "wall, and sparre and rafter" (line 990)? The motive is hardly humanitarian, nor even strategic in the military sense since the Theban forces have already been defeated. Its only objective is pillage—to pay off the Athenian troops—and, of course, it is while ransacking the dead that they find Palamon and Arcite still alive among a pile of corpses, a detail unique to Chaucer’s text. While such a practice was endemic to chivalric warfare, it was difficult to contain once started, and it would inevitably produce results inimical to Theseus’s stated purpose for going to war against Thebes, which was to right a wrong done to a group of helpless women. As Maurice Keen writes, the trouble with the practice of looting-as-pay was that to pay off soldiers in this way

was not the same as to disband them. They had to be left at large, still armed with equipment that was their own, beyond control; and so whole provinces were subjected to the indiscriminate pillaging of soldiery that sought to claim a share in chivalry but whose manner of living was the antithesis of what chivalry stood for, the protection of the poor, the fatherless and the widow.

Knight’s Tale poses the pivotal question about war: Is there such a thing as civilized warfare, as war fought for a just cause in a controlled manner as a means of restoring order to society, or do all wars inevitably lead to acts of savagery and excess that make a mockery of policy?35 Ancient Thebes is the story of a sustained, sordid, brutal, and self-indulgent lust for power and pleasure eventuating in spectacular violence—Cadmus and the dragon-tooth warriors, Oedipus’s primal crimes against nature, Eteocles and Polynices’ impiety and fratricidal warfare, Creon’s desecration of his nephew’s corpse and subsequent murder of his niece Antigone. The idea of a moderate use of force to serve the common good is alien to the Theban legend. Statius considers the possibility of a good war by inserting the Athenian warlord Theseus into the myth of Thebes. Theseus brings peace to Thebes and, in Statius’s version of events, saves Antigone, but only after an unforgettable orgy of death has occurred. As discussed above, Chaucer returned to Statius’s brooding treatment of the Theban material in order to foreground it. He rereads the Teseida through the lens of the Thebaid, turning it from a conventional love story into a philosophical reflection on the nature of love, war, and governance—both earthly and cosmic. Indeed, it becomes a kind of theodicy, asking why humans must suffer so much and whether there is a benevolent order that transcends the individual ills of human experience, providing an origin for temporal governance. In this vein, Chaucer presents the stadium Theseus builds to hold the tournament as a theatrum mundi, a microcosmic space in which Theseus will try to civilize the unruly dispute between Palamon and Arcite, itself symbolic of the dynastic rivalry between Polynices and Eteocles. 36

Ominously, there is nothing to stop Theseus’s men from just such rapine, as he "dide with al the contree as hym leste" (line 1004).

For Chaucer, it seems it is not justice but fortune that decides the outcome of war. The eldest Argive widow reminds Theseus of the role of "Fortune" in war, and Chaucer returns to the idea of the uncertainty of military ventures in the temple of Mars murals, where an enthroned "Conquest" (line 2028) is depicted with the sharp sword of Damocles hanging over his head by the thinnest of threads. Perhaps Theseus learns this lesson, as he moves steadily away from militarism in Chaucer’s narrative, changing the rules of the tournament to prevent mortal combat and ending the strife with Thebes through the diplomacy of the parliament. Yet, even in the mock battle of the tournament, death cannot be prevented, despite his best efforts. Is Chaucer suggesting that the prospect of limited warfare for some greater purpose (in this case the eventual pacification of Thebes) is human folly?

Ferber is a fourth-generation French patissiere whose specialty is her unusual, delicious jams and jellies, which have gained an international following among chefs (Alain Ducasse, who wrote the foreword, serves them at his renowned restaurants) and other gourmands. This book, a best seller in France, presents dozens of recipes, organized by season, for preserves from Black Cherry with Pinot Noir to Greengage and Mirabelle Plum with Mint; a number of them include chocolate, not a standard addition. Few of the recipes include headnotes, although translator's notes identify the more exotic ingredients; instructions are on the brief side. However, any jam maker will find Ferber's book fascinating. Recommended for all canning and preserving collections.

Interesting but requires tinkering

It is true, as a number of people have mentioned, that this is not a how-to-can book, but I didn't expect it to be. Besides, these jams are not processed. They are just poured in the jars, lidded, and tipped over to "seal." That's fine, but people should be aware that since these are not processed jams, there can be no snarky remarks about how this is for advanced canners. There is no canning here, period, not as Americans understand it.

The recipes are interesting, but they call for a huge amount of sugar, far more than is typical nowadays in jam recipes. All that sugar ensures that after you open the jam, it does not have to be refrigerated; there is too much sugar to allow for much mold to grow. For me, though, this amount of sugar overpowers the fruit flavor. Even the apple pectin recipe is full of sugar. I wasted a lot of sugar making a bunch of that when I could have made it it without any sugar at all and it would work just as well. I've used a number of the recipes now and have cut down the sugar enormously (and processed the jars for 5 minutes in a BWB). They taste a lot better to me. I would rather refrigerate a jam after opening and have a more fruity flavor than add so much sugar that the fruit is barely identifiable.

As someone mentioned in comments, some of these recipes won't set (even if you add all the sugar called for). I believe that is because Europeans tend to like more runny jams than Americans do. I have sure seen that with Russian jams. At any rate, I too became frustrated with testing and testing and not getting any set.

The one thing I really like about this book is the technique of adding the sugar to the fruit and letting it cold macerate overnight. The next day the fruit is cooked a bit and then the juice is drained and boiled down. The fruit is added back in later. This way, the fruit doesn't turn to mush. It makes for a very pretty jam. I have used this same technique in American recipes, such as those in Canning for a New Generation, and it works well.

I'd give it four stars except for the excessive sugar, which requires redoing each recipe, in my opinion. Also, no yield is given for any of the recipes, which is a pain.

Wonderful, exotic jams

This book is one of the most exciting cookbooks that I have used recently. Besides containing standard flavors such as strawberries and peach, it also has the more interesting combinations of Pear with a Balsalmic Vinegar and Spices, Carrot with Cardamom, Strawberry and Balck Pepper, and so forth. Every combination I have tried has been incredibly good, especially the Raspberry with Star Anise. Most of the recipes seem to make about 5-6 half-pint jars, but as it's not stated anywhere in the book, make sure to sterilize a few extra. These jams always come out fresh-tasting and with a slightly soft set, the benefit of using natural pectin in fruit and not adding one. However, since some of the low pectin fruits still require pectin, there is a recipe for green apple pectin stock to provide the needed pectin, great if you have access to underripe apples.

This is a great book, especially for those wanting to take preserve making one step further and try interesting combinations. In fact, trying those interesting combinations certainly got my creative juices flowing and inspired me to make some fun mixes of my own.

However, this is not a book that goes over the particulars involved in preserving foods and canning, and the necessary sanitation and precautions it entails, so any first-time canners need to pick up another book or do some research online for these techniques.

All in all, I would definetly buy this book again if it was ever lost or stolen by the many admiring friends who have borrowed it so far.

The best jam ever!

I cannot rave enough; this book is simply my favorite cookbook to date. Christine's recipes are delightful, her cooking techniques alone are worth the price of this book. I cannot tell you how fantastic these jams are, so you'll just have to make them for yourself. The first week I tried 16 of her recipes. All were fantastic, but the raspberry lemon and elderflower jam is the tastiest thing I've ever scooped out of a jar. I am smitten Ms. Ferber, I think you're a genious.

Although others on this site seem to discount the brilliance of this work based on what it's 'lacking', the experienced reader will no doubt see beyond the critics and judge this book for what it offers. I have used other jam books for controls and the techniques in this book produce a fresher, brighter mote balanced product every time. Fantastic! I LOVE Christine Ferber, she's elivated my jam to new heights!

Besides, who wants to go to all the trouble of making jam at home when most recipes call for pectin, which is loaded with preservatives? Isn't that why many of us make jam in the first place? Once you try these recipes you'll be scratching your head wondering why people use pectin in the first place! It just ruins perfectly delicious fruit.

This is an excellent resource for those seeking to understand the underpinnings of statistical education and reasoning about variability and uncertainty. The book contains 6 chapters edited by Andrew Zieffler and Elizabeth Fry of the University of Minnesota. Each chapter tackles a different but related question of how students and preservice teachers understand (or misunderstand) statistical and probabilistic concepts. All are highly accessible and relevant to the increased focus on statistics, probability, and modeling in the Common Core State Standards in the US (and related curricular efforts worldwide). I recommend this for many purposes, including a journal club reading group or use in a statistics education class or seminar.

BUY THIS BOOK, and MAKE SOME FLUTES!!

Absolutely loved it! I believe I am qualified to rate this book, as I have been making Native American style flutes myself since 1983. For those that have seen Charlie's YouTube videos (https://www.youtube.com/user/BlueBearArts/featured), his straightforward style and humble manner so familiar on screen transfers readily to the printed page. It is filled with decades of practical experience and wisdom. I have not yet had the pleasure of meeting Charlie, but after seeing him so often on video, and now after reading his long-anticipated book, I feel we are kindred spirits. If you are new to flute making and want an brain aneurysm from all the math, read Lew Paxton Price's books. If you want to hit the ground running and make real, beautiful sounding, heirloom quality flutes, you need look no further than this book. Well done, Blue Bear!

This is a great book. If you are a follower of Charlie's YouTube channel, you won't be disappointed. Charlie's informative, honest and likeable manner come though in his book as he guides you though making flutes providing a wealth of information for each step of the way. Well-written, Excellent Illustrations and Photos

So far, so good. Well illustrated text. Not as "step-wise" as I might have thought, but the information is all here. As I am a tech writer and routinely write "how to" procedures..... I am probably pickier than the rest with how a "how-to" manual is laid out. As I said, the information is all here, but not quite in the order I would have expected it to be in. The excellent illustrations make up for this though, so all in all I would say this is a great manual for someone wanting to make themselves a Native American "style" flute.

Asks the Right Questions...

Great because it grabs these spectacular entrepreneurs and asks them the right questions...not about the particular weeds and problems of the moment (like initial funding) but specifically what made them successful. The answers are, sometimes, non-obvious, empirically validated and actionable.

The book also kindled in (most) of its participants a high level of candor and personal introspection. Usually these types of entrepreneur profiles are eclectically superficial, just one level deeper than a Frequent Flyer magazine hagiographic bio puff piece. There is some real insight here...and the diversity of the group (from heavy industrial to ZipCar) and the entrepreneur's personalities come through so clearly.

Some of my favorites are Catherina Fake, Chris Dixon, Jeff Dachis, Mark Echo, Lisa Gansky, Robin Chase and Elon Musk. Here's a quote from Tesla/SpaceX's Elon Musk on Unions, it gives you a flavor for the freshness and candor in the book:

I once asked the factory technicians on the floor what
they saw as the best value of unions. They said that if their boss was a
jerk, they had no recourse, but the union gave them a recourse. So I
made the rule, "There will be no jerks here." If one of your managers
persists in being a jerk, fire him. It helps morale, and it's a great way
to minimize people's tendency toward being jerks.

Great Book, Filled with Advice

While I initially had low expectations, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of this book. The author did a great job with the interviews and captured a ton of great advice. I'm giving it 4 stars because it seems like many of the bios were rushed -- there were numerous bios that were confusing and didn't properly summarize the person's experience.
