Where to go

No trip to Cuba would be complete without a visit to the potent capital city, Havana. A unique and personable mini-metropolis, characterized by a small-town atmosphere, its time-warped colonial core, Habana Vieja, is crammed with architectural splendours, some laced with Moorish traces and dating as far back as the sixteenth century. Elsewhere in the city there are handsome streets unspoilt by tawdry multinational chain stores and restaurants: with relatively little development since the revolution, the city retains many of its colonial mansions and numerous 1950s hallmarks.

The provinces to the immediate east and west of Havana, together with the capital itself, are where tourist attractions are most densely concentrated. Visited frequently by day-trippers from Havana, Pinar del R'o, the centre of nature tourism in Cuba, offers more than enough to sustain a longer stay. The most accessible resorts for walking are Las Terrazas and Soroa, focused around the subtropical, smooth-topped mountain ranges of the Sierra del Rosario and Sierra de los Organos, but it's the peculiar mogote hills of prehistoric Vi ales valley that attract most attention. Beyond, out of sight of the mountains, on a gnarled rod of land pointing out towards Mexico, there's unparalleled seclusion and outstanding scuba diving at Mar'a la Gorda.

There are beach resorts the length and breadth of the country but none is more complete than Varadero, the country's long-time premier holiday destination, two hours' drive east from Havana, in Matanzas province. Based on a highway of dazzling white sand, stretching almost the entire length of the 25-kilometre Pen'nsula de Hicacos, this is where most tourists come for the classic package- holiday experience. For the tried-and-tested combination of disco-nightlife, watersports, sunbathing and relaxing in all-inclusive hotels, there is nowhere better in Cuba. On the opposite side of the province, the Pen'nsula de Zapata, with its diversity of wildlife, organized excursions and mixture of hotels, offers a mlange of different possibilities. Across the eastern border from Matanzas into next-door Cienfuegos province, tourist attractions begin to appear less frequently. Travelling east of here, either on the autopista or the island-long Carretera Central, public transport links become weaker and worn-out yet picturesque towns take over from brochure- friendly tourist hot spots. There is, however, a concentration of tourist activity around the historically precious Trinidad, a small colonial city brimming with symbols of Cuba's past, which attracts coach parties and backpackers in equal numbers. If you're intending to spend more than a few days in the centre of the island, this is by far the best base, within short taxi rides of a small but well equipped beach resort, the Pen'nsula de Anc--n, and the Topes de Collantes hiking centre in the Sierra del Escambray. Slightly further afield are a few larger cities: sociable Santa Clara with its convivial main square and thronging crowds of students is the liveliest of the lot, whilst laid-back Cienfuegos, next to the placid waters of a sweeping bay, is sprinkled with colourful architecture, including a splendid nineteenth-century theatre. Further east, the workaday cities of Sancti Sp'ritus and Ciego de vila, both capitals of their namesake provinces, provide excellent stop-offs on a journey along the Carretera Central. Two of the most popular destinations in this part of the country are off the north coast of Ciego de vila province. With their reams of creamy white beaches and tranquil countryside, the luxurious resorts of Cayo Coco and Cayo Guillermo, on the secluded cays of the same name, are growing month by month.

Continuing eastwards into Camagey province, the smaller, rather remote resort of Santa Luc'a is a much promoted though less well equipped option for sun- seekers, while there's an excellent alternative north of here in tiny Cayo Sabinal, with long empty beaches and romantically rustic facilities. Back on the Carretera Central, the romantic and ramshackle city of Camagey, the most populous city in the central part of the island, is a sightseer's delight, with numerous churches and intriguing buildings, as well as a lively nightlife, while the amiable city of Holgu'n is the threshold to a province containing the biggest concentration of pre-Columbian sites in the country. Guardalavaca, on the northern coast of Holgu'n province, is one of the liveliest and most attractive resorts in the country, spread along a long and shady beach with ample opportunities for watersports.

While Guantnamo province, forming the far eastern tip of the island, is best known for its infamous US naval base, it is the jaunty seaside town of Baracoa that is the region's most enchanting spot. Isolated from the rest of the country by a high rib of mountains, the quirky town freckled with colonial houses and populated by friendly and hospitable locals is an unrivalled retreat, popular with long-term travellers.

With a sparkling coastline fretted with golden-sand beaches such as Chivirico, the undulating emerald mountains of the Sierra Maestra, made for trekking, and Santiago, the country's most vibrant and energetic city after Havana, Santiago de Cuba province, on the island's southeast coast, could make a holiday in itself. Host to the country's most exuberant carnival every July, when a deluge of loud, sweet and passionate sounds surge through the streets, it is testimony to the city's musical heritage that you can hear some of the best Cuban musicians here all year round. Trekkers and revolution enthusiasts will want to follow the Sierra Maestra as it snakes west of here along the south coast into Granma province, offering various revolutionary landmarks and nature trails.

Lying off the southwest coast of Havana province, the Isla de la Juventud is often overlooked despite its immense though low-key charms. Easily explored over a weekend, the island promises leisurely walks, some of the best diving in the country and a personable capital town in Nueva Gerona. In the same archipelago is luxurious and anodyne Cayo Largo, the only sizeable beach resort off the southern coastline of Cuba.

This is a VERY GOOD, and informative guide.

This guide runs a very close second to Christopher Baker's Cuba: Moon Travel Handbook. It is extremely informative and the basic information section is one of the best.
The central part of the guide (accommodations, restaurants and sights) is one of the most accurate on the market (though McAuslan's comments are very terse). The maps were easy to use and above the average found in most other Cuban guides. This guide has one of the best bibliographies on Cuba found in a guide book today, but sadly lacks any mention of notable films that can be viewed to gain an appreciation of this country.
On the downside, the index DID NOT list hotels or restaurants and this required that you flip through the section until you find the listing you wanted (especially a hassle in Havana). There were NO email or Internet addresses to speak of (especially useful for the hotels) even though the published date is 2000. That is disappointing considering that almost every hotel listed in this book is, and have been using cyberspace for the past few years.
The strength of this guide, as with most Rough Guides, is its first hand knowledge that is geared for the budgeted adventure traveler. The selections that list accommodations and restaurants, included budget hostels and eateries that are often disregarded in other guides. A trademark to Rough Guides is the placement of the history, culture, people, etc. at the end of the guide instead of at the beginning.
Over all this is a VERY GOOD, and informative guide, that I strongly recommend. Only slightly better is "Cuba" by Christopher Baker's (Moon Travel Guides, [see review]) and just a notch behind is "Cuba" by David Stanley (Lonely Planet [see review]). Regardless, you will not go wrong with any of these three guides. Recommended

Roughing it Caribbean style

Anyone who's travelled anywhere on a budget is no doubt familiar with the Rough Guide series, the definitive answer to what's hot and what's not in your destination of choice. This book is no exception. With carefully researched short pieces on Cuban history, music and culture in general, they provide an insight into what makes the place the diverse experience it is. Minus points awarded for organisation in the chapter on Havana, and one restaurant highly recommended did not, on personal experience, measure up. In general though the book made getting around easier and gave a good introduction to the place and the people. Reviews are kept to the point and accomodation listings usefully gave an indication of price and facilities. Worth the asking price..

About the Author
Daniel Rosenberg is a film-studio executive and producer. In July 2001 Daniel and his wife, Leora, were married in her hometown of Johannesburg, South Africa. They have a daughter and live in Manhattan.

Anthony Grafton teaches European history at Princeton University. He is the author of numerous books and articles on the history of classical scholarship, the history of science and the history of learning, from late antiquity to the twentieth century.

Warning: most illustrations are not in focus

It is with much regret that I must report that an otherwise excellent book has a major production flaw.
As far as I can tell, it appears that the author's provided scanned images of many ancient documents to the designer at Princeton Architectural Press. The layout and type is all excellent. But, it looks like the majority of images were not properly sharpened in Photoshop (a standard procedure when using scanned images) before being imported into InDesign (or possibly QuarkXPress) for the production of the book. There are a few images that are sharp. They appear to be taken with a digital camera or are more modern timelines converted directly from EPS vector files for the layout. In one example you can see the original scan, fuzzy, and next to it a sharpened close up of a part of the very same image.
If it is not a problem with the designer doing sharpening of images, than it is some kind of problem with the printer overseas either using the wrong image data or un-sharpening the images in some way.
It does not appear to be a screen alignment issue or something physically done wrong in printing. (Although, on a few signatures, the text is foggy but I think that is the ink thinning out - a consequence, perhaps, of Princeton Architectural Press saving money by going to overseas for printing.)
Why do sharp illustrations matter in this book? Because it is all about very detailed graphs. It is nearly useless because one cannot make out any of the details in the images printed in the book.
Really a shame that this disaster happened. The designer and the editor should have caught this in the proofs and corrected it before publication. If it was entirely the printer's fault (it is could be) then Princeton Architectural Press has a good cause to go back to the printer and find out what happened and hopefully, the printer will redo it if it was the output or printer's mistake.
The book would only be worth buying if very deeply discounted. If recalled and reprinted properly, I would give it 5 stars. It is otherwise a fascinating book.

A History of Histories Flowing on the Page

"While historical texts have long been subject to critical analysis, the formal and historical problems posed by graphic representations of time have largely been ignored." So starts an impressive illustrated book _Cartographies of Time: A History of the Timeline_ (Princeton Architectural Press) by Daniel Rosenberg and Anthony Grafton. The reason the timeline is ignored is that it seems so obvious - plot historic trends on a line, the earlier ones on one end leading to later ones on the other. It is such a simple idea that it is a surprise that we didn't know about it as soon as we started putting marks on paper. Yet there is a history of the development of such lines, and it is fascinating how the lines caught on once people started charting history on paper. That such graphic histories are useful seems obvious; they have the potential for giving visual form to historical flow, and for showing connections of one trend to another. There are plenty of serious charts of time shown here that conscientiously do just that. There are other charts, just as serious, that have been designed to show, for instance, how Jesus is going to return in 1843, and there are idiosyncratic charts by Dadaists which show not much of anything but in a highly complex fashion. The book is most entertaining when it looks at these oddities, but there is nothing like it to show our progress at taking graphic time seriously.

The antecedent of the timeline was probably the lists and tables giving a chronology of rulers and important events. Family trees lent themselves to chronological display, although many of the ones here are so complicated that it is hard to see the years ticking by. By far the most important name here is Joseph Priestley, whose experiments in chemistry helped in understanding what oxygen did and whose religious beliefs forced him to flee to America to avoid persecution. He was the inventor of the time map as we know it. One of his charts produced here is _A Chart of Biography_ (1765) showing a horizontal line for each scientist on the chart (the chart shown concerns those involved in investigating vision, light, and color, but there was a more extensive chart that showed artists, statesmen, historians, and more). Each line starts on the birth year and ends on the death year of each scientist. Elegant and effective, it was a watershed: "Though it followed centuries of experimentation, it was the first chart to present a complete and fully theorized visual vocabulary for a time map, and the first to successfully compete with the matrix as a normative structure for representing regular chronology." Many of the charts here are direct descendants of Priestley's, and many of them are designed to push a particular religious view. The millennial views of an imminent apocalypse in the nineteenth century combined with cheap printing rates produced many strange charts, some starting with the seven days of creation and ending, as they say, "in the not so distant future." Among the charts shown here is a representation of history up to 1843; that was the date when the followers of the New England minister William Miller predicted the Apocalypse, and history was to end then, so the chart did, too. His followers were disappointed that the end did not come in 1843, and when it did not come even in 1844 it was clear that there was some error, and, the authors say tactfully, "both Miller's predictions and his chronology charts had to be radically revised." There were other charts afterwards to show a later year for the end; at least some learned the lesson that no such end is predictable, and those who thought it still predictable were not so bold as to put a date on it.

This book is filled with gorgeous color pictures of the charts. It must be said that some of the pictures are just too small, but this seems unavoidable when some of these charts were huge, more than fifty feet long. Many are crammed with words, too, and so we should probably thank the authors for reading them for us and then reproducing them in a way that offers no temptation for us to scan them from beginning to end. The ones that can be read are fascinating, like the Marconi Telegraph chart that shows the time and position of transatlantic steamers for April 1912, by which it could be seen which ones ought to have been near enough the _Titanic_ to help her out. Buckminster Fuller produced a chart in 1943 to show how the world was about to have a technological revolution that would end war and poverty. Closer to accurate is the simple graph by Gordon Moore, the famous "Moore's Law" which shows the inexorable increase of speed of computing as time goes by, and has proved to be surprisingly accurate. Mark Twain had a chart that was part of his history game, and there were other games that were graphic ways to help remember important historic dates and events. There are not only timelines but time circles, and in one case a time dragon from 1672. There are brilliant time maps and silly ones, ones based on facts and some based only on artistic interpretation. Collected in this handsome volume, they make a rich show of graphics and of our attempts to make sense of history.

Brilliant topic utterly ruined by too-small images

I have to agree with the reviewer J. Coates. This book should be a five star just for the originality of the subject matter, and the author's excellent coverage. But the publisher has defeated the author's intention, which is to display the rich history of timelines.

I will give you just one example from many. On page 143, the book shows two images from Auguste Comte's Positivist calendar from 1849. Each of these images is about 80mm by 40mm: about one-tenth the size of the original, as far as I can tell. Unless you are using the Large Hadron Collider to get a better view, the images provide only the vaguest of approximations.

There is no point in buying this book if you are over the age of 40: your eyes simply will not be able to cope without a magnifying glass and a Maglite for illumination. The font size of the body text is somewhere between eensy-weensy and really eensy-weensy, and the font size used for captions makes a 6-point font look like banner headlines.

I don't know if the publisher shafted the author, or if the author colluded in this massacre of his own vision. One day a better publisher will reprint the work in a much larger format, and then we shall have a truly great work to read.

I love this book

I love this book. I wish I could have listen to him while he was alive. It basically filled me in about the Clinton's, Acorn, Academia before I was born, ect. It even gave interesting facts about history. I had to fact check stuff on my own cause it felt so far off but it was all true. I feel like I could listen to Ben Shapiro or even Danish D’Souza talk about the late 90’s without being completely lost. If you want to know the origins of social justice warriors this is the book. Sounds a little conspiratorial but it perfectly explains this weird way of today’s thinking.

Great book from a courageous genius.

Andrew Breitbart is pulling back the curtain in so many areas you've just got to admire his courage and the energy with which he has focused on exposing hypocrisy if not downright blatant criminal activity. From the Leftist bias of Hollywood to the same in mainstream media with his BIG websites and now this terrific book, he is changing the face of practices-as-usual and validating those who don't fit into the Left's more frequent than not narrow and intolerant perspective within whatever industry is prone to such. Andrew Breitbart is doing what vast armies of people in media should be doing and he's doing it creatively, intelligently and honestly. This book was well written, entertaining, and makes the reader aware that there is a great deal more in the undercurrents than we realize.

Modern Day Revolutionary

Andrew Breitbart makes a strong case for boycotting the main stream media and embracing the new media. The author describes the incestuous relationship between the institutional left and the "Democrat-Media Complex". While helping launch the Huffington Post, and being the founder of Big Government, Big Hollywood and Breitbart.com, he makes his case for embracing independent new media on both sides of the political spectrum, similar to the UK's media model where neither the left or right media outlets masquerade as unbiased and objective when they clearly are not.

The author makes a prediction that the main stream media outlets will eventually marginalize themselves as a direct result of disregarding ethics and journalistic integrity and replacing those virtues with the the Alinsky-esque philosophy that the ends outweigh the means in pushing the institutional left's progressive agenda. A revelation that is slowly becoming a reality with massive layoffs and direct cash infusions required in various elements of the "Democrat-Media Complex" which will no doubt be subsidized by the public coffers under the guise of objective journalism, due to the public's loss of confidence in these outlets (defies logic, I know).

The author takes the reader to the Breitbart war room explaining how he forced the main stream media to cover the Acorn and "Weinergate" scandals, two of many feathers in Andrew Breitbart's cap. He also explained in detail how Matt Drudge forced the main stream media to cover the Lewinsky scandal when they, taking queue from the white house's John Podesta, were doing everything they could to stifle the story and discredit the messenger. The main point I took away from this book is that these types of controversies are newsworthy and necessary if we are to have an informed republic and that if the main stream media is going to continue to refuse to cover these types of stories until their hand is forced to do so, then I will consume my news feeds from alternative news aggregation sources that aren't adhering to a pre-shaped narrative, regardless of real world events.

It was George Orwell who stated that "In a universe of deceit, truth becomes a revolutionary act" - The late Andrew Breitbart was truly a revolutionary in his time, even if he wasn't the most eloquent writer.

Better than I Expected

This reference guide was better than I expected. Their is detailed information about every GLOCK model, including the ones that aren't available in the U.S. and why. Sadly, the book went to print before the author could test the new G43, but their is a free PDF of an additional chapter covering the G43 available on the publisher's web site. The link is at the end of the book, and with the free PDF, this really is the complete guide to every GLOCK model ever produced. It even covers GLOCK's accessories (knives, entrenching tool, lights, holsters, etc.), maintenance, GLOCK Sport Shooting Foundation (GSSF), armorer's course, and suppressors.

If you want to know everything there is about your GLOCK, and the GLOCKs you don't have yet, this is the perfect guide for you.

This is a 2014 published book, all of the "newer"Glock information is in this book. It is a complete book on the Glocks, all of the generation's of Glocks, the parts, the years introduced, parts difference between the generation's, this is the best source of information about Glocks from the start until now. It's a great book, reference manual, parts catalog.

Best Glock Reference

This is the single best reference on the history and comparisons between different generations, models, calibers and variations of Glock pistols. The photographs of key parts are excellent as well. It is well written, clear and comprehensive. I thought I knew a lot about Glocks but that was before I read Robb's book. If you are going to buy only one book about Glocks, this is the one to buy.

Like getting advice from a wise relative

The Art of Manliness is actually a website that is full of great information. They also have a facebook page and will let you know when new articles are posted. I believe it was last year that 31 Basic Life Skills was posted. The great thing about it, for me as a parent, was that as they posted, it made me think of things that we might need to talk about before our son left for college next year. Now that time is months away, and being able to send this book with him is one more way to show my support to him as he transitions from boy to man. Many of these things may have been taught in the home, when a young man is really out on his own, the details that he may have forgotten may be important. This book is practical, but also gives a sense of the "arm around the shoulder" that may be comforting to a young man trying to make his way in the world for the first time. I cannot overstate how great I think these lessons are, and I wish the Art of Manliness website would publish more of their articles in book form.

Great read but not entirely there.

Being a fan of artofmanliness.com, their books, and just starting out on my own, I found this book to be easy to read and enlightning. It's set out for the 31 days and gives out neat advice, particularly how to gain credit, ways of cooking with little material, and advice on networking, along with simple guides for tying a tie, making a bed, and changing a toilet's "guts". All of this is provided in a neat, blue cover and I'd recommended it to newcomers.

My gripe with it is that, for some of its subjects, the book provides links to artofmanliness.com articles. I don't discredit these articles' accuracy and helpfulness, they are good, but are not guaranteed to hold up years from now. It felt like promotion for the site and a cheap way to shorten pages instead of providing physical content that can be read years from now. Also, more could've been provided for simple subjects; more ways to tie a tie.

It's a small negative in the series, as the first two artofmanliness books were self-contained creations, but still one I would recommend.

Very good book!

I would give this book 4.5 stars if I could. Overall, the book works as a primer on various skills like cooking or fixing a flat tire. My only gripe is the fact that the book sometimes points to URLs that link to the actual Art of Manliness website, where a short elaboration in the book would've sufficed. With that said, I wouldn't mind going on to the AoM website but perhaps not everyone has Internet access.

Invoking the words and spirit of Thomas Paine, investor-turned-historian John Bogle concedes that his ideas for revamping the mutual-fund industry are perhaps "not yet sufficiently fashionable to procure them general favor." But despite likening the "ills and injustices suffered by mutual fund investors" to those "our forebears suffered under English tyranny," Bogle--founder of the Vanguard Group--makes a strong case for index funds with this exhaustive study of investing.

He begins with primer-like essays on investment strategy, championing mutual funds for their inherent investment value, and then grinding each point home with a bevy of graphs, charts, entertaining anecdotes, and common sense. He repeatedly stresses time as a basic tenet for investing, listing these simple rules: "Time is your friend"; "Impulse is your enemy"; "Stay the course." And then he proceeds to blast fund managers, who have become marketers rather than managers. A Buy Buy Buy

Although I have investment experience , I really enjoyed book and have recommended it to folks
that don't have a clue when it comes investing in the stock market. But this book may be a bit too much for them.

Instead it may be a more appropriate read to those with some investment experience.

However, John Boggle really is a revolutionary when it comes deconstructing the myths of investing.

And thats critical because the industry is designed to make investing confusing and complicated. Hence people thinki they
need an investment advisor to guide them. Unless you have very complicated portfolio, index or passive investing in time, is
a winning proposition when it comes to participating in an amazing wealth generating program.

The fact of the matter is less 5% of all active money management manager beet the market. The question is.. if you don't know who the 5% of professional are who beat the market , you're going to spend time and money on people that can't beat index investing.

Boggle is truly a visionary and had to take a lot of heat from the industry stating that his system of indexing is never going to build a portfolio large enough to make difference in one's financing future.

Fortunately he has proven all of the naysayers wrong.

You may have to read certain sections twice or so yet if you want to be in the stock market, you can pick up
the basic concepts and general terms to begin taking control of your financial future.

Do it yourself, don't hire a financial advisor

People say that investing is complex and confusing and that you need to hire a financial advisor to help you on investing your money for a comfortable retirement. After reading this book, I found that much of what you hear from the financial industry is wrong and is designed to confuse the retail investor. The truth of the matter is that investing your money is not complex and that you do not need a financial advisor. If you listen and follow the advise from much of the professional investor class about where you should put your money, you would be making them rich at the expense of your savings. John Bogle is doing us retail investor's much needed truth about how to manage your money and has the roadmap and proof to tell us, what most others in the industry has long kept silent and a secret. The truth to investing is that it is not secret, do it yourself, it is not complex, and don't listen to the advise of professional portfolio managers who are out to take your money while pretending to have your back, they don't because it is at their expense. Go with Bogle's folly, read the book, and follow the wisdom in it, and you will do better than 96% of all funds managed by the portfolio managers.

sometimes simplicity must be exhaustively explained to be believed

this is *the* book to read on mutual funds. it's a hefty tome coming in at 600+ pages, but fear not. this book does not read like a dry financial report. bogle is opinionated and his writing flourishes with reminders of his personality amidst the endless but important charts and tables. to spice things up, bogle makes references to a wide variety of sources including shakespeare, thomas paine, scripture and even hegel! by the time you're done, you'll know *everything* you've ever wanted to know (and more) about the mutual fund industry, all straight from the founder of the vanguard group himself. for those afraid of the size of this book, perhaps check out bogle's "little book of common sense investing" instead and then come back to this book if you want more details.

bogle's main message is that costs do matter and simplicity is the best way to avoid costs. the recommendation is to buy low cost broad-based index funds that will outperform the vast majority of actively managed mutual funds in the long run. notice by the definition of "average" that the average investor will get average market returns minus fees and taxes. notice the low cost broad-based index fund gets average market returns minus *minimized* fees and taxes. the index investor will thus outperform the average investor in actively managed mutual funds given all the extra costs associated with active management. also notice that the margin of victory from indexing will compound over the years and will lead to an even greater index fund performance in the long run. that's the gist of why indexing works. if you're not convinced, read bogle's book!

even if you've already read some of the other great passive investing books espousing the virtues of indexing, you still owe it to yourself to read at least one of bogle's books. "common sense on mutual funds" is both readable as well as comprehensive, and would be a good addition to your library. burton malkiel, rick ferri, william bernstein, larry swedroe and others have all written excellent books on the subject as well, but they also hold differing opinions on the specifics, so read all of these authors! i was already convinced on indexing after first reading malkiel's book, but continued reading more on passive investing to work out all the details. these books as a whole help reinforce the main ideas while also exposing the reader to the authors' differences in perspectives, thus building confidence in the reader to think and succeed as an independent d.i.y. investor.

of particular interest to me was the issue of small-cap value tilting. i was ambivalent on this practice, but bogle's book convinced me to *not* small-cap value tilt. readers who already know what small-cap value tilting is should feel free to skip to the next paragraph. now, for those unfamiliar with the terminology, stocks are divided according to size (small-cap, mid-cap, large-cap) as well as style (value, blend, growth). the size refers to the company's size as measured by its market capitalization, i.e. the number of shares multiplied by the price per share. the style is another way to partition stocks according to certain numbers such as price/book ratios and dividend yields; there's no agreed upon standard that's universally accepted for what constitutes a value/blend/growth stock. informally, you could think of value stocks as those that are not currently favored by the market for whatever reason. at the opposite extreme, growth stocks are "hot" stocks that scream potential. blend stocks are in between value and growth. given 3 sizes and 3 styles, there are thus 9 size-style combinations. according to research done by professors fama and french, small-cap value stocks significantly outperform the other 8 size-style combinations in the long run. the problem is, small-cap value stocks make up about 3% of the total stock market. small-cap value tilting means overloading on small-cap value stocks to try to capture the bonus identified in the fama/french research, but that also means underweighting 97% of the total market and potentially missing out if the other 8 size-style combinations outperform small-cap value. you see the dilemma.

bogle's repeated message of simplicity, as well as his emphasis on reversion to the mean, ultimately convinced me to resist the temptation of small-cap value tilting. bogle's unwavering conviction in the simple serves as a necessary component in the chorus of voices, helping to guide your investment decisions, even on the more esoteric matters. and although the message of simplicity is easily stated, i am glad bogle wrote a comprehensive text because the details illustrating the majesty of simplicity is what finally settled the small-cap value tilting question for me.

this book's huge size and scope definitely has its drawbacks, not the least of which is the sheer intimidation factor. nevertheless, i believe this book does serve a useful role in the catalog of passive investing, and bogle was the only one who could've written it.
